Of his 37 years in Canadian Armed Forces his most enjoyable postings were to Search and Rescue where he felt he was doing a useful service for his countrymen.

Lewis “Lew” Grant Ervin
1936- 2024

At the age of 8, watching a large formation of aircraft fly overhead, Lew announced to a schoolmate that “someday he would be up there”.  And he did…
In 1952, at the age of 16 Lew joined the Reserves, receiving training as an Aero Engine Technician.  He had his first flight on a C45 Expeditor, and shortly afterward joined the RCAF.  While at RCAF Station Winnipeg, he met and married his wife of 65 years, Eva.  In 1967, he became a Flight Engineer in 111KU Search & Rescue Squadron (Winnipeg).  Later the same year, family in tow, Lew transferred to 442 Squadron Comox (Search & Rescue) where he was Flight Engineer on the CH113 Labrador Helicopter.  Around this time, he earned his Private Pilot’s License and purchased his first airplane, C-FWKE.  In 1974, Lew was promoted to Sergeant and became a crew member on C130 Hercules aircraft with 435 Squadron Edmonton. In 1979 he attained the rank of Warrant Officer and in 1981 became Chief Training Engineer for 435.    Lew retired from the Military in 1982, turning his attention to small aircraft and working as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and later, owner of Park Air Service in Ponoka, Alberta.  In 1996 he established the Ervin Aviation Flying School.  Whether he was in a helicopter hovering adjacent to a sheer mountain face, or in a Herc taking off out of a war-torn country in Africa, or flying his Cessna 150 over the Rocky Mountains, he cherished every moment of association with aircraft.  After years of seeing the world through the windshield of an aircraft, Lew and Eva enjoyed seeing some of the same countries as tourists.  He continued to operate Park Air, and regularly “pull wrenches” well into his eighties.  In his last few years, he spent his time rebuilding C-FWKE with his daughter.
The experiences Lew had in his 72 years in aviation fueled stories that were shared widely with family and friends, and even his doctors and nurses in the last weeks of his life.  On November 5, 2024 he passed peacefully in the company of his family.
